Simple OPM never sounded that good until they came to the scene…
This story happened today.
I was busy writing an article in the comfort of an air-conditioned conference room earlier this afternoon when I saw on Facebook’s News Feed an urgent plea from an online buddy, my idol in photography, and fellow Sugarfree fan. His name is Sir Chris.
His message went…
this is kanye west’s latest and it’s pure twisted art and is a dark masterpiece! get your copy now!!! it lives up to the album title my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
around 9:30 pm last night, i was just playing with my ps and the laptop was also on because i was listening to the last broadcast of nu107. naiinis ako dahil choppy yung connection ng ustream nila and friends from an old MIRC chatroom asked me to go to the studios, meet up there and be a witness to their closing. so i changed clothes and immediately went to emerald ave at ortigas. i saw the people, the candles and you can feel the magic of real music lovers. i also used the time and opportunity to interview some of the people there as part of my article in an online magazine. i can feel the emotion of people in the place. there were tears falling from the eyes of true blooded rock fans, fans were singing altogether to pay homage to the home of new rock. minutes went by and by the hour of 11 struck it was getting even more emotional. i can also say that i myself, is also getting that emotional too. seeing the station that gave me the inspiration to be on radio, closing down was a sad sight. dong abay, nino avenido, reg rubio, ira cruz, ebe dancel and other rock personalities were some of the guys I’ve seen before they closed down. djs from the station had their own speeches and you can feel the sadness from their voices. the last few minutes were the most emotional of all, when station manager chris hermosisima said his last few words for the station, people began to cry, i admit i was one of those who cried. the song “huling el bimbo” was the last song played and fuck it was amazing! people were singing, and all were cheering for the home of new rock. but when it was all over. we knew that it was an end of an era. no more pure, solid and unadulterated rock for the filipino audience. it just hurts that a part of me died. now, what’s next? with the influx of masa stations, it seems that the trend is like this, bakya djs who can’t even pronounce a single word right, djs who can’t even tell what the title of the song is without the playlist, watch some wowowee videos for and see how lame they are. you can count the djs who are in it for the music, who are in it for the passion, it’s all about the money. masa stations now dominate the airwaves all because of commercialism. and nowadays the standards changed, before we are english speaking jocks, now we speak in filipino, there’s nothing wrong with it, but mixing it with the gay lingo simply makes jocks as teachers of the low standardization of the masses. jejemons, bekimons, were all a product of this. and it sucks. i read an article from sgt. pepper saying that a cigarette vendor knows his english because of what he heard on radio, but nowadays, you can barely see them. what happened? what went wrong?
to be honest i work on a masa station, but thank god i have colleagues who can pronounce and announciate the english language right and precise. but what about the others? why can’t they find jocks who can help educate the people in terms of language, it’s degrading that before we are good english speakers but now, NOT.so how did nu107’s loss became an era ending thing? simple, we lost jocks who are passionate because of the music they play, the audience they catered, and the of course it wasn’t all for the money. we lost several radio stations that gave good music and real DJs like campus radio 97.1, citilite 88.3, la 105.9 and during those years it was never really the same. to NU107, thanks for the music, it was a real blast and i am grateful that you are one of my inspirations that made me wanna go on radio and be a jock. nothing will ever be the same without the home of new rock, well this time i guess we just have to support the rock scene, and for the artists, maybe it’s time we cross borders and make music like its the last day in the world.. and now a question lingers in my mind, if …. radio closes down are we gonna see the same scene at emerald avenue last night?
“kay tamis ng ating samahan sa lungkot at kaligayahan
tunay na kaibigan, kasamang maasahan
salamat at tayo’y may pinagsamahan
salamat kaibigang walang kapantay”
